GETTING STARTED

Calligraphy is a craft that requires hours of practice. It is essential to master pen positions, angles and strokes__and then understand the basics of calligraphic letters.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

Before beginning calligraphy, sit in a comfortable positions in front of your drawing board or table. You may may want to set your drawing board at an angle for greater flexibility. Plenty of light, whether natural daylight or lamp light, is essential for practicing calligraphy.

  • ANGLES

The key to calligraphy lies in the angle the pen is held. This must be a constant angle, usually between 30degree and 45degree to the horizontal lines on the paper. Never rotate the pen. The angle of the pen is essential to achieve the thick and thin style of the letters----little pressure is needed.

  • STROKES

Calligraphy is not the same as writing; each letter of the alphabet is formed one stoke at a time. Letter strokes are pulled down and to the right with firm wrist action. The pen is never "pushed." Remember, calligraphy achieves its look by the angle of the pen, not the amount of pressure exerted.
